Climbing the Kili
The Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters or 19,340 feet), is the summit of Africa and the world’s highest freestanding mountain. On the border of Kenya and Tanzania, the Kili reigns over the African plains.

Although the climb is not a technical one (you’re supposed to be able to reach the summit without using your hands), it is not really a walk in the park! The altitude combined with extreme temperatures (we will actually be crossing 5 climate zones, with temperatures ranging from + 40°C to -20°C!) and building fatigue makes this a challenging endeavour.
We are planning to do the climb during the last week of February 2009 and will be taking the Rongai route. This high quality, low traffic route is the only one that approaches the Kili from the North, is supposed to take us through the most scenic parts of the mountain and give us good acclimatization opportunities. We will be assisted by a guide and porters and will be sleeping in tents. A true expedition!
I am hoping to see different kinds of plants and animals as we will work our way through the tropical rainforest and the Alpine desert all the way up to the eternal snow at Uhuru Peak. The plan is to be at the summit around 7 am on Thursday February 26!
My father has done his medical check up and the doctor declared us fit for service. Our training consists of long walks and regular joggings. Although this will not guarantee us to make it to the top, a good physical condition should make the climb more comfortable as we will recuperate faster and better.
I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to fulfill one of my dreams and I do realize that many children do not have this chance and struggle to survive. That is why I make this climb a fundraising event. As our trip is 100% self-financed, every cent will be forwarded to “Amani Kids Home”. Please check out the “Raising Funds” and “And you?” pages on my blog. I would appreciate if you would consider sponsoring me or contact me for more information. Thank you very much in advance.
